In April 2007 the IBM Institute of Business Value published a white paper on collaborative innovation, The power of many: ABCs of collaborative innovation throughout the extended enterprise. It describes a framework for success based on:
A = Alignment: Align strategy with organization, both vertically and horizontally
B = Boundaries: Manage external relationships with business partners and stakeholders
C = Commitment: Commit to ongoing support and cultivation of collaborative innovation
In April 2007 the authors of this white paper discussed their findings to members of three communities: The three organizations were:
- The Greater IBM Community
- The GBS Alumni Community in the Americas
- The Global Innovation Community at IBM

The plan for a wiki to carry the "ABC" ideas forward evolved from discussions around that meeting.
While the white paper uses just two case studies to exemplify the framework -- Eli Lilly and Airbus, the wiki will be used to aggregate additional examples. These might exemplify innovation around business model, operational processes, or new products and services. These might also include programs of societal innovation such as:
- World Community Gridharnessing the collective computing power of people around the world to tackle AIDS, cancer and other kinds of research.
- The Genographic Project a collaboration between IBM, The National Geographic Society and millions of people around the world to discover how the human genome migrated around the world
While IBM is a sponsor with many examples to contribute, the wiki is intended to draw from the entire business community.
