1a. Name of organization. Link to web site, if available. If not parent organization, specify division. Specify name of department if relevant.

1b. Name of partners in this collaborative innovation case. Include links to company web sites.

2. Business scenario/situation before collaborating. Provide brief business background, industry landscape, problems faced, weaknesses and potential threats

3. Innovation strategy Explain alternative strategies considered for innovation; reasons for choosing to collaborate; and methodology followed to operationalize the strategy.

4. Summary description and milestones. Describe steps taken and how were they different from traditional or usual approach among peer organizations in industry or region.

5. Types of Collaborative Innovation. Mention all that apply:

  • Business model innovation (Fundamental design of the business; how the organization creates economic value for customers and stakeholder, possibly disrupting its industry)
  • Product/service/market (What the business offers to which customers and how it stays ahead of competitors)
  • Operational (Processes used to create efficiencies and improve quality, and make innovation inherent across extended organization)
  • Societal (Making a difference in the world – advancing quality of life through health, environment and education)

Issues related to internal alignment (E.g. Power struggles and turf battles, infrastructural bottlenecks, organization culture, geographic challenges etc)

Issues related to management across external boundaries. (E.g. Conflicts over IP, ownership and other governance issues, changes in strategy or direction of one or more partners, exit of key individuals etc)

Challenges faced in winning and sustaining organizational commitment(E.g. Erosion of trust, programs discontinued due to very long gestation periods etc)

10. Benefits achieved

  • Intangible or qualitative. Future opportunities, growth avenues, competitive advantage gained, shareholder optimism, employee morale, awards received
